Significant progress tracking an elusive endangered bird

We are thrilled to introduce Dan, an Australian Painted Snipe whose recent capture and tagging marks a heartfelt addition to an ongoing project to track the behaviours and migratory patterns of this endangered species.

Biosis is a proud sponsor of the project, led by Dr. Matt Herring from Murray Wildlife, which aims to unravel the mysteries surrounding Australian Painted Snipes.

As many know, Dan was named in honour of our late colleague, Dan Gilmore; an inspiring zoologist who deeply cherished his work with Australia’s native fauna. Dan's passion for the natural world and dedication to conservation left an enduring impact on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him. Through the Australian Painted Snipe project and our ongoing Daniel Gilmore Scholarship, his legacy continues to inspire the next generation of conservationists.

Dan the snipe joins other tagged birds like Gloria, Hope and Marcelina in helping researchers pinpoint critical habitats such as nesting grounds, drought refuges, and possible undiscovered populations. It is our hope that tracking Dan will reveal new insights and help secure a brighter future for the Australian Painted Snipe; data from each tagged bird’s journey will help scientists understand and protect this endangered species.

This project remains close to our hearts as it not only supports the conservation efforts of this species but also serves as a tribute to a remarkable individual. Through these initiatives, we proudly honour Dan Gilmore's memory and his commitment to Australia’s wildlife.
