Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange Environmental Assessment
Stefan Rose and Brian Wilson and the team from our Newcastle office have recently undertaken a significant environmental assessment (Species Impact Statement – SIS) associated with the proposed Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange. This proposal is one of the key regional infrastructure projects for the Hunter region and will stimulate significant jobs and economic growth in the local area. The proponent (Lake Macquarie City Council) is particularly aware of the potential ecological impacts (among other things) associated with the proposal and considers protection of local ecological values to be a critical component of the project.
The SIS, which looked at the potential ecological impacts of the works, identified two threatened flora species, two threatened fauna species and one endangered ecological community. These all require careful consideration during the planning and construction of the interchange. Stefan, our senior ecologist in Newcastle, is an accredited BioBanking Assessor and has provided quantitative advice on offsets which will ensure that the habitat offsets required for the threatened entities are robust and transparent. This will allow the interchange project to proceed with minimal environmental impact. The assessment and on-going advice to the client by Brian and Stefan are an integral component of the infrastructure planning for the project.
