The Biosis Cultural Heritage Team obtains permission to proceed with the Browns Creek Midden Community Archaeology Project (BCMCAP). The BCMCAP represents an important development in community archaeology in Victoria by bringing together stakeholders from a variety of sectors for a rare research opportunity. Excavation of the extensive archaeological midden site located on the Great Ocean Road will take place in the Autumn of 2013 with the cooperation of Aboriginal Affairs Victoria (AAV), La Trobe University, Southern Otway Land Care, Coastal Care, and three Aboriginal Traditional Owner groups with cultural connections to the area. Biosis will provide technical expertise, training and project management skills to the project, which has the potential to contribute important information on the age, use, and abandonment of one of the largest middens recorded along Victoria’s coastline.
