The Oaklands Hill Wind Farm consists of 32 wind turbines, located 3km south of Glenthompson in Western Victoria. The wind farm will provide 63 MW of renewable wind energy to domestic, commercial and industrial users.
Biosis was part of the team that undertook a wide range of comprehensive studies to evaluate potential impacts of the wind farm on flora and fauna, landscape, heritage, visual amenity and other environmental factors.
From 2006, Biosis undertook assessments and provided advice on the risk of avian collision and vegetation impacts at the wind farm site. A planning permit was required to operate the wind farm and Biosis carried out bird utilisation surveys, bat surveys, Brolga regional surveys, Net Gain assessments and threatened flora surveys to inform the application.
Biosis zoologists undertook a landscape scale Brolga investigation which, as the first of its kind, set the standard for Brolga assessments at wind farm projects across the species' range. Biosis also carried out a bat survey at rotor swept height.
Coordination of regional scale surveys for threatened species is complex; with experience and expertise, Biosis provided ecological advice to inform careful planning for the project.
The planning permit application was successful and Oaklands Hill is now a fully operational wind farm, thanks in part to the assessment approaches and innovative solutions provided by Biosis.
